Wendell R. “Dick” Hess, 82, of Cairo, MO, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at University Hospital. He was born, January 6, 1943 in Moberly, MO, the son of Ernest and Julia (Wilson) Hess. He was united in marriage to Verna (Sutton) Hess, September 11, 1982, at the farm on Sugar Creek Lake in Cairo, MO. Wendell resided in St. Louis until he returned to Randolph County in 1985. He worked for St. Louis Police Department for 21+ years as a motorcycle officer and Randolph County Sheriff Department for 16 years as a jailer. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, archery, target practice, working on guns, watching Fox news and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Verna Hess and his dog Ruger of the home: three children, Anthony (Marci) Dodd of Cairo, MO, Deanna Pinnell of Carrollton, MO, Richard (Marinda) Hess of Cairo, MO; eight grandchildren, Tiffani Dodd, Josh Pinnell, Colby (Payton) Dodd, Nathan Jennings, Emily Jennings, Kyle Jennings, Anna Hess and Richard (Jr) Hess; eleven great grandchildren Benji, Olivia, Parker, Eyden, Max, Esmee, Evaeh, Emmaline, Gatlin, Natalie, Gentry; one brother, Philip (Brenda) Hess of Cairo, MO; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and several close longtime friends and neighbors.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at a visitation held at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a funeral service honoring and celebrating Mr. Hess's life. A private committal will be held at a later date.
