Vernon A Sutton, 95, of Cairo, passed away, Sunday, April 6, 2025. He was born, February 10, 1930, in Reynolds County. Mo, to the union of Christopher Columbus “Lum” and Frances “Dolly” (Worley) Sutton.
He served in the US Army prior to receiving an Honorable Discharge; after service he was employed as an aviation machinist working for McDonald Douglas, later known as the Boeing Company. He was proud to have worked with NASA on the Projects Mercury and Gemini. He recieved a Citation for this work, "In recognition of contributions to the United State' pioneering space programs of Projects Mercury and Gemini, hailed among the most important and successful explorations in the history of mankind, this citation is hereby conferred upon: Vernon Sutton, A member of the astronautics team, whose efforts produced even greater results than anticipated, giving the United State virtually every important record in manned space flight. Conferred the 7 day of November 1968. Signed by Wm. Dubusker, Director of Operations McDonnell Douglas Astronautis Eastern Division.
He loved to hunt and fish, leather crafting and woodworking.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Kiser) Sutton, of Cairo, 3 children, Verna Hess and her husband Dick and Linda Burbank and her husband, Roger, all of Cairo, and Gary Sutton and his wife Gina, of Brunswick, 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, a sister, Louise Middleton of Bismark, Mo, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and “Poncho” his dog.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Ervin, Elmer, Earl and Elva, and 5 sisters, Floy, Blanche, Bert, Dymple and Eileen.
Words of comfort and support were shared with the famiily at a visitation held at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, followed by funeral services and military honors celebrating Vernon's life. A Private committal prayer and burial took place at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville.
