Shawn Thomas McGinty, 51, of Moberly, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020. He was born June 7, 1968 in Moberly to Tom and Rebecca Sue (Kester) McGinty.
Shawn joined the U.S. Army in 1985 and was stationed in Germany. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Medal and the Overseas Service Medal. Shawn successfully completed the Army’s Airborne Course at Ft. Benning, GA and was awarded the U.S. Army Parachutist Badge, prior to receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1992.
After leaving the Army, Shawn moved to Columbia, MO, where he was learning to be a chef.
On May 7, 1997 Shawn was involved in a very bad motorcycle accident and suffered critical injuries and traumatic brain injury. After numerous surgeries and a long period of rehab at Rusk in Columbia, he was transferred to the traumatic brain injury unit at 4 Seasons Living Center in Sedalia, MO, where he resided until his death.
Survivors include his father, Tom McGinty of Madison, a brother Brian McGinty, his grandmother, Boots McGinty both of Moberly, uncle, Pat McGinty and wife Marge of Kansas City, MO, two aunts, Virginia Barger of Clark and Mary Shoaf of Edwards, numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Services honoring and celebrating Shawn’s life were held in the Cater Funeral Home Chapel. Military Honors, committal prayer and burial followed at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
