Royalin Carlson

November 21, 2023

Royalin Carlson, 82, died peacefully in her sleep while residing at McClay Senior Care in St. Peters, MO. She was a long-time resident of Moberly, MO, where she made many friends.

Royalin was born in Madison, WI, to Roy and Mabel (Parman) Stewart. She was also raised by her second mother, Dora (Rindy) Stewart. She grew up in Mazomanie, WI, along with two older brothers and two older sisters. She graduated from Mazomanie High school in 1959 where she played cornet in the band. After working for a year, she attended the University of Wisconsin – Platteville where she met her husband, Harold.

They were married on July 29, 1961, and had two children, Jodi and Doug. In 1971, they transferred with Wick Homes to Moberly. They also owned and operated Triangle Building and Design in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She also worked as a bookkeeper for several companies and retired from GE Capital in 2007.

While her children were growing up, Royalin was active with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and served as Camp Fire Girl and 4-H leaders. Later, she attended many of her grandchildren’s band concerts, soccer games, and other important events. In the early 1990s, Royalin and her husband organized the Moberly Pow Wow for many years in Rothwell Park. They were also great dance partners together and were members of the Little Dixie Squares square dance club for many years. As an avid football fan, Royalin cheered on the Green Bay Packers and the University of Wisconsin Badgers.

She was a long-time member of Coates Street Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and an elder and volunteering for several committees.

Her talents as a seamstress and quilter resulted in outfits for her daughter, square dance dresses and Western-style shirts, many quilts for herself and others, pow wow regalia for her husband and herself, and a large canvas tipi. She was a charter member of the Magic City Piece Makers quilt guild and was currently serving as president at the time of her death. She was always reading a book or two and enjoyed playing in a Liverpool rummy card group with friends.

Royalin was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents and second mother, brothers Ken Stewart and Terry Stewart, and sisters Leah (Stewart) Bachman and Ruth (Stewart) Christensen. She is survived by her daughter Jodi (Carlson) Blake (husband Dan); son Doug Carlson (wife Julie); granddaughters Adrienne (Carlson) Spangler (husband Will), Erin Carlson, Leah Carlson, and Rachael Blake; grandson Ryan Blake; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society or Coates Street Presbyterian Church.

Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at a visitation held at the Cater Funeral Home. Funeral services honoring and celebrating Royalin’s life were held at the Coates Street Presbyterian Church.  Committal prayer and burial took place in the Oakland Cemetery.
