Philip S. Mathis, 80, of Moberly, Mo., completed his mission 12/10/2024.
Phil was born in Moberly, Mo., January 15, 1944, to Robert R and Larue (Stacy) Mathis. He graduated Moberly High School in 1961 before joining the United States Air Force on July 13, 1961. He did basic training in Lackland AFB, TX., for Aircraft Refueling. He served duty at Bergstrom AFB, TX., RAF Lakenheath, England and Elgin AFB, FL. He served in Korea after which he returned to the United States. He was honorably and medically discharged on December 11, 1968, with the rank of SGT E4. Philip received the following medals for his service: Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Presidential Unit Citation.
He was a member of several Masonic Lodges since joining in May 1999. He held numerous positions including Worshipful Master-Clark #610, Secretary-Moberly #344, Marshal – Old Milton #151, Tiler- Cairo #486. He was also a 32nd degree Masonic member of the Scottish Rite from the Valley of Columbia.
Phil was a long-time volunteer at the VA, a multi-term member of the Randolph County Ambulance District, a VFW member, and a lifetime member of the DAV.
In 1978 Phil met his love, Marjory Kay Chaney. They married August 01, 1980, at which time they made their home in Moberly, Mo.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents,and a son Lee Monroe Mathis.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marjory, sidekick Abby the Schnauzer, daughters, Molly Ann and Susan Larue, grandson, Ryan and Bianca Manning, great granddaughter, Kehlani Marie, a brother, Michael Robert other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. In lieu of flowers Memorials to the DAV at the Harry S Truman Hospital or the Moberly Masonic Lodge #344 would be appreciated
Words of comfort and support may be shared with the family at a visitation to be held, Friday, December 20, 2024, 10 am - 12 pm, at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, to be followed by Masonic Services at 12 Noon.. Military Honors will follow at 1:00 PM at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery Shelter, Jacksonville Mo. followed by a committal prayer and inurnment.
