Obituary

Helen Joyce Vanderhoff, 91 years, of Moberly, Missouri, formerly of Montgomery county, passed away Sunday, December 29,2024, at Boone County Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Joyce was born in Mineola, Missouri, in 1933. She went to the Mineola one-room school through eighth grade and graduated from the Montgomery City High School.

Joyce and her first husband, Pete Hubbard, lived in Mexico, Missouri. They moved to Danville, Missouri, where they built a house. Pete passed away, and she married Melvin Vanderhoff after her children were grown. Melvin and Joyce lived in Moberly, Missouri, since 1973. For many years, Melvin and Joyce went to Texas during the winter months. They made many great friends during those trips.

Joyce’s favorite pastime was quilting. She quilted all of her adult life and made numerous quilts, which she gifted to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Joyce was an excellent seamstress all of her life, making nearly all of her daughter’s school clothes. Her family was everything to her.

She worked in Wellsville, Missouri, as a seamstress in the garment factory. Joyce was also a Randolph County Deput Sheriff for many years.

Joyce made the best homemade rolls and fried chicken. She knew everyone’s favorite pie and was happy to make a dozen different pies to make sure everyone had their favorite. Joyce was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.  She also had fun going to Boonville to the casino and playing cards with her Moberly friends.

Joyce raised three children by herself:  Gerald G. Hubbard, Eminence, Missouri; Barry L. Hubbard (Jane (nee Korte), Montgomery City, Missouri; and Karen J. Brendel (James), Holts Summit, Missouri.

Joyce’s grandchildren are: Scott Hubbard (fiancé Katrina Benuska), Salem, Missouri; Shelly (nee Hubbard) McDavid (Eric), Imperial, Missouri; Nancy (nee Hubbard) Blaue (Adam) , Wellsville, Missouri; Tim Hubbard (fiancé Amy Miller), Linn, Missouri; Pete Hubbard (Jessica (nee Rockamann)}, St. Charles, Missouri; Emily Evans, St. Peters, Missouri; Evan Brendel; and Elise (nee Mathis) Brendel (granddaughter-in-law), Cairo Missouri.

Joyce’s great grandchildren are: Aaron Benuska; Amy Hubbard; George McDavid; Penny McDavid; Katie (nee Blaue) Nelson; Libby (nee Blaue) Smallwood; Will Blaue; Emma Steele; Nala Hubbard; Maryrose Hubbard; Sofia Evans; Oliver Evans; Meghan Hopkins; Rhett Brendel; and Kelly Brendel.

Joyce’s great-great grandchildren are: Alice Nelson; George Nelson; Clark Smallwood; and James Smallwood.

Joyce leaves behind one brother: Kenneth R. McCormack, Columbia, Missouri.

Other survivors include: Lanny L. Hubbard, brother-in-law; Mary Lou Hubbard, sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Deceased family members include: Melvin W. Vanderhoff, husband; Marion Glen (Pete) Hubbard, husband; William T. McCormack, father; Emily Ruth (nee Johnson) McCormack, mother; William E. McCormack, brother; Marion E. McCormack, brother; Dennis McCormack, brother; Meghan Gwen Brendel, granddaughter; Wanda Brown, sister-in-law; Hettie (nee Hatcher) McCorrmack, sister-in-law; Mary Lucille Hubbard, mother-in-law; Ralph L. Hubbard, father-in-law; George O. Krumanocker, brother-in-law; Geraldine Krumanocker, sister-in-law; Michael Vanderhoff, stepson; Henry Vanderhoff, father-in-law; Estel (nee Murphy) Vanderhoff, mother-in-law; William Vanderhoff, brother-in-law; Sue Vanderhoff, sister-in-law; Arthur Bailey,-brother-in-law; and Lois Bailey, sister-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home, #1 Veterans Dr., Mexico, MO 65265

Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at a visitation that was held at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel  followed by Funeral services honoring and celebrating Joyce’s life. A private committal and burial took place at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville.
