James Leslie "Les" Mitchell

James Leslie “Les” Mitchell 74, of Moberly, passed away, February 18, 2024 at home surrounded by his family.  He was born, January 11, 1950, to James Lawrence and Hertha Allene (Prather) Mitchell, and graduated from Cairo High School in 1968.   

Leslie worked for 27 years at Norfolk & Southern Railroad as an Engineer.  He enjoyed playing music with his friends and was an avid guitarist.  Leslie was known for his love of Mopar Muscle cars. Whether it was racing the quarter mile drag strips or just being around the car shows, he was always excited to be near his love of cars. His most recent hobby was collecting gas and oil memorabilia.

He was married for 48 years on February 14th to Connie Kay Fleming. He was a devoted family man. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, and creating cherished memories that will be treasured for generations to come. His legacy of love, integrity, and resilience will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to have been part of this life.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children, Brad Mitchell of White House, Tennessee,  Chad (Carrie) Mitchell of Independence, Missouri and Amy (Michael) Arens of Columbia, Missouri.  He has four grandchildren: Audrey Denise Mitchell, James Ryan Mitchell, Brinley Michelle Arens and Blake Lesley Arens.   Two sisters: Corene Dale of Cairo, Missouri and Erma Jean (Carl) Armstrong of Moberly, Missouri.   He is also survived by brother-in-law Jerry Fleming of Columbia, Missouri, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family preceding him in death besides his parents are brothers, James Larry and Edward Lee Mitchell, grandparents, Finis & Lareen Prather and Robert & Clara Mitchell, father and mother-in-law Jerome & Mary Jane Fleming and brother-in-law, Roy Dale.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Family Life Fellowship Dream Center.

Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at a visitation that was held at the Cater Funeral Home.  Funeral services honoring and celebrating Les’s life were held in the Cater Funeral Home Chapel.  Committal prayer and burial took place at the Memorial Park Cemetery.
