Obituary

Jackie Delano Sumpter Sr passed away peacefully at Moberly Regional Medical Center on May 15, 2025. Jackie was born on November 20, 1936, to Wayland H Sumpter, Sr and Cora Mae (Coliver) Sumpter in Higbee, MO.

Jackie married his soulmate, Ruth Evelyn Noah, on February 26, 1955. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Mark Twain Assisted Living on February 27, 2025, with family and friends.

Jackie was a member of Fairview Church of Christ in Higbee, MO all his life. During his early years of marriage, he worked road construction along with his brother Gary. They built highways, and several homes together including two Jackie built mostly on his own.

Jackie got a job with the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, MO as a Carpenter. He worked primarily at Ellish Fischel Hospital. He retired from the University after 19 years in 1998. Jackie loved to watch the St Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs! He was a Master Hunter and fisherman. He loved all types of hunting and fishing. It was not just a sport to him; it was a necessity to feed his family as well.

Jackie loved watching old westerns, bird watching, and he loved playing guitar and banjo and was self-taught.  There were many family get-togethers with fish fries and other celebrations. Jackie loved to do all the outdoor cooking. Many evenings would end with JAM sessions around a campfire playing and singing with his brothers, and brother in laws classics like Hank Williams Sr, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and many others. Jackie loved his family, and as his grandchildren began to be born, he was especially proud of them and enjoyed spending much time with them. One of their favorite activities was driving his little tractor around and all the children wanted to ride in the wagon. He doted on them every chance he could.

Jackie and Ruth hosted 5 Foreign Exchange Students during their years living in Higbee.

Jackie is survived by his wife Ruth Sumpter, Mark Twain Assisted Living in Moberly. Judy Mudd (Charlie) Moberly, Phyllis Rodgers, Texas, Jack Sumpter Jr. (Nancy) Madison, Debbie Mattox (David) Moberly. 12 Grandchildren and 29 Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayland Sr and Cora. Daughter, Karen D Janssen, 1 Sister Elnora Laytham, 7 Brothers, Wayland Jr, Billy J, Russell L, Gerald, Vernon G, Gary T, Adrian, and several nieces and Nephews.

Funeral Services honoring Jackie’s life were held at Cater Funeral Home Chapel.   Committal payer and Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairview Cemetery, 17129 Hwy. B Clark, MO 65243.

A special thank you for attending Jackie’s celebration of Life. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents at Mark Twain Assisted Living, for their generosity, love, support, and friendship to Jackie and Ruth for the past 3 years. Also, much gratitude to the staff at MRMC during his last days, they were wonderful, took excellent care of Jackie and very caring for the family and all visitors that paid their last respects. Jackie had a very genuine and charismatic personality, and he was loved by many!
