Obituary

Harold “Gayle” Wolf, 86, born February 3, 1939, in Brunswick, Missouri, was a devoted family man and beloved community figure. Known simply as “Gayle” to friends and family, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen (Graves) Wolf, and their three children: Michael Stephen Wolf, Christina Louise Wolf, and Geoffrey Jonathan Wolf. Two sisters, Lucretia Morrison and Pam Gordy, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gayle’s professional journey was rich and varied. In his early years, he held a range of jobs, including designing a mini-golf course and coaching basketball. He began his career working for his father, Harold Wolf, and later served as an art supervisor in Brunswick, Missouri. He then became Head of Advertising for the Kenmore line at Sears Roebuck Co. in Chicago. Gayle then returned to Moberly to take over the family business, Wolf Oil Co. He concluded his career as a successful realtor with Century 21 in Moberly.

In retirement, Gayle became the cheerful face of Boomer’s Fireworks in Moberly, where he was known as “Boomer.” His people skills and sense of fun made him a local fixture and a source of joy for generations.

Gayle was deeply involved in his community. He spearheaded the “Love 30” tennis court project at Moberly High School and volunteered for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and many other charitable causes. Though he didn’t seek recognition, his quiet generosity—both professionally and personally—left a lasting impact. He was considered by many to be “a great guy” who was always quick with a smile.

Family always came first for Gayle. A devoted husband and father, he was fully invested in the accomplishments and happiness of his family. He and Mary Ellen were endlessly supportive of their children. Gayle was known for documenting life with his trusty 1980s video camera, which he was rarely seen without.

He also took pride in maintaining a well-kept lawn and home, and found joy in entertaining guests at their lake house at Holiday Acres Lake—where summers were filled with skiing, swimming, and friendship.

Gayle will be dearly missed by family and friends. His paintings and actions leave a legacy of a man with great talent, kindness, and good intentions. They don’t make many like Gayle—and those who knew him were lucky to share time with him.

Memorials can be sent to: Food For The Poor,  Parkinson Foundation, or The Humane Society

Words of comfort and support were shared with the family at a visitation held at the Cater Funeral Home.  Funeral services honoring and celebrating Gayle’s life were held at St. Pius X Catholic Church.  A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
