Obituary

Gertrude Rufkahr, 98 of Cairo, MO formally of Moberly, went home to be with the Lord July 10,2026 with her loved ones by her side. 

“Gertie” was born May 9,1928 in Huntsville Missouri to Vane and Susan Inez (Matlock) Bowers. She was the 7th of nine children. 

She married Joe Rufkahr on April 12,1974 in Moberly, and she spent most of her life as a homemaker. 

“Gertie” had a great sense of humor, and one of her favorite things to do was to copy jokes and cartoons and share them with everyone. She even took them to her chemo treatments. If you got a card from her, you got jokes and stickers. 

She loved to travel, so her and Joe would load the camper up and they visited many states. They also wintered in Weslaco TX. many years before Joe passed. She also traveled some with her son and daughter in law David and Lisa.

She taught herself to crochet and made too many items to mention. She shared with everyone and if you visit you probably walked away with a towel or dish cloth. 

She was always up for a game of cards. She even got one more game in a week before her passing.

She is survived by her children Beverly Shoemaker of Columbia, Barbara White and her husband Wayne of Cairo, MO, Andy Barton and his wife Rita of Centralia, MO, David Barton and his wife Lisa of Louisburg KS and Susan Bernand her husband Bill of Moberly. 16 grandchildren, many great and great- great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Nellie Goephert, state of KS, Teresa and Gary Milsap state of Oregon, Lari Sartain and Lori Lewis both of Renick MO, nieces, nephews, other relatives and Friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Rufkahr her parents, siblings, Lloyd, George, Elwood, Jimmy Bowers, Lucille Stagg, Marguerite Tooley, Elizabeth Boylr In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer society in Gertrude's honor 

Words of comfort and support may be shared with the family at a visitation to be held, Tuesday July 14, 2026, 3-5p.m at the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, to be followed by Funeral services honoring  Mrs. Rufkahr’s life  at 5pm.  Committal prayer and entombment will takeplace at the Resurrection Mausoleum , Oakland Cemetery.
