Gary Thomas Sumpter, age 82, of Moberly, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022. He was born to the union of Wayland and Cora (Summers) Sumpter, August 21, 1940, in Renick, Mo.
He married June Conway, December 17, 1993 and she preceded him in death May 3, 2016. Also preceding him in death were his parents, a sister Elnora Duncan and brothers Wayland, Jr., Billy, Adrian and Gerald Sumpter.
Gary is survived by his children, Robert “Rob” Sumpter and his wife Cristine, of Jefferson City, Mo., Kathryn “Kathy” Sumpter, of Moberly, Mo., Cherita “Cheri” Williams and her husband Michael, of Springfield, Mo., and their mother Virginia Carter, of Huntsville, Mo., step children Donna Taylor and her husband Carl of Moberly, Mo., Brenda Garbulski and her husband Craig, of Moberly, Mo., Shelly Raymann and Junior Johnson of Macon, Mo., and Michael Hershey of Higbee, Mo., brothers Jack Sumpter of Renick, Mo., Vernon Sumpter of Higbee, Mo. and Russell Sumpter of Madison, Mo.; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He enjoyed fishing and camping every year with relatives, Gary and June enjoyed going to auctions, garage sales, to “find a good deal” which he always seemed to be able to find, he loved to treat his wife, June, to a vacation in Las Vegas, that was their “spot” and he so enjoyed watching his wife have the time of her life, he loved to build things, from highways all over Missouri, to around the KC Airport, Moberly Airport, and Whitman Air Force Base to just name a few, Gary would tell you there weren’t many roads in the state he hadn’t touch either building or repairing. He will always be remembered for his love of family and instilling good values for us to follow, kids and grandkids, he wanted us to know the means of hard work so we could always be self-sufficient.
Words of comfort may be shared with the family Friday, November 4, 2022, 10am – 12 pm in the Cater Funeral Home Chapel. Services honoring Gary’s life will follow at 12:00 pm. Committal payer and burial will take place at the Oakland Cemetery.
