Obituary

Eldon Ray Smith Jr., born January 31, 1936, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, at his home in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was born in Moberly, Missouri, to Eldon Ray Smith Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Bowden. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.

Eldon is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jacqueline Rae (Smith) Freelon; grandson, Lawrence Woods; his granddaughters, Tara Walters and Kenya Walters; and his life partner, Arlene McGee; other relatives and friends.

Eldon graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He dedicated much of his professional life to working for the federal government as an agricultural scientist, where he conducted soybean research at the University of Missouri. He was known for his strong work ethic and steady presence — a hardworking, dependable man who could always be counted on. Eldon had a deep love for business, valued his friendships, and cherished time spent with those close to him. One of his greatest passions was roller skating, a hobby he enjoyed well into his late seventies.

Eldon will be remembered as an admirable, honest, fair, and caring man whose character left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
